Channeling your Sex Drive

Puberty defined in The Penguin Encyclopedia is ‘the period of change from childhood to adulthood characterized by the attainment of sexual maturity and full reproductive capacity’. It begins earlier in girls (age 11) than in boys (about age 13) and lasts between 3 – 5 years.

At this stage it is very crucial that parents educate their children and make them understand the physiological changes taking place and how to deal with it. For a guy the sex drive and the urgent urge to merge begins and if not controlled and channeled may lead them astray.

Having a sex drive isn’t bad; you definitely need it to replenish the earth in holy matrimony. But as youths, teenagers and young adults you need to develop self control. The impression that marriage would cures the lack of self control is wrong. In fact marriage would not cure any sex problem, it would amplify it. The only way is to control your God given sex drive and when the time is right get married and live right. Self Control is an ongoing process and doesn’t stop after marriage.

Soon after I became born again abstinence and sexual purity became the watch words. At least I had the scriptural knowledge and teachings to live by, however it didn’t take away the urge, or does it? It is important that we keep ourselves pure and maintain a healthy sexual life style especially as teenagers, young adults and singles. It requires a determination and desire please God and be pure. Sexual purity has been debased and now classed as old fashion. Young girls seek ways to lose their virginity while the young men keep track on how many girls have fallen victim to their sexual escapade. You can hardly find a TV program void of sexual scenes, references or connotations, even children cartoon characters portray these acts.1 Corinthians 6:20For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. - King James Version

The language of the day includes swearing and lewd words. Designer fashion labels roll out clothes that are tight fitting, reveal cleavages, nipples, buttocks and sensual parts of the female physiology and the ladies with low self esteem that buy and wear them don’t help the situation either. With the world as it is, every uncovered cleavage, indecent exposure by ladies flaunting their assets rings a bell and speaks volumes to the mind, making the whole process of renewing the mind and staying sexually pure a difficult one.Proverbs 6:25Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids. - King James Version

One day I found this scripture and began to confess them and it did work and helped me stay focused.Job 31:1I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid? - King James Version I decided to occupy myself and time with activities that would keep me from falling.

Wherever I found myself, I identified with the body of the church and become spiritually employed and active in a group ministry. it is not that there aren’t the temptations in the church but being in the church environment and focused on the serving God helps a lot. It is important to find a bible believing church where you can hear the uncompromising word of God and find mentors to emulate.
Right from my childhood, I’d always wanted to play the piano. Teaching myself to play the piano was a sure way to utilize my time and energy, I taught myself to read music, play hymns and play the keyboard from fake sheets. It has been a steep learning curve and there have been several times I thought of giving up. I glad I had the courage to keep on going and not quitting. Another thing I engaged in to take my mind away from other things is programming and web design. Add photography to that list.
Renewing the mind involves filtering inputs through the gates to our minds; our senses. I do not think I’m a social misfit or weird but in my growing up years I did not see the need or essence to go clubbing. In my understanding, the disadvantages far outweigh the benefits. It may be lawful but it wasn’t expedient. Now, after marriage I can go to the club with my wife. My music collection changed overnight after giving my life to Christ, the R&Bs, blues and the likes gave way to gospel music with the likes of Ron Kenoly, Terry Clarke, Helen Baylor, Bob Fits, Don Moen, Graham Kendrick, Alvin Slaughter, the list goes on.

Sexual purity is in vogue, relevant and attainable. I raise my hat to those that maintain sexual purity as singles and in marriage.
